A Year of Daily Smart Glasses Use: What I'd Actually Tell a Buyer

A full year of near-daily smart glasses use, across a couple of hardware generations at this point, is enough to give someone considering a purchase honest, specific advice rather than the launch-week enthusiasm or backlash that tends to dominate coverage of this category.

Buy for a specific use case, not the category broadly

The single biggest mistake I'd steer someone away from is buying into "smart glasses" as a general concept rather than identifying a specific, real use case first, quick capture, hands-free reference, translation, and picking hardware that's actually strong at that particular thing. Buying based on the most impressive feature in a keynote demo, rather than the feature you'll actually use weekly, is how these end up in a drawer after the novelty wears off, which I've watched happen to more than one person who bought in with excitement and no specific plan.

Budget for the accessory ecosystem, not just the sticker price

A charging case, potentially a wristband controller depending on the model, and the reality of these needing more frequent charging attention than a phone, add real ongoing cost and habit-building beyond the initial purchase price. Going in expecting that overhead rather than being surprised by it has made the difference between people who stick with these long-term and people who quietly stop wearing them within a couple of months.

Would I recommend buying a pair right now

For someone with a genuine, specific use case that matches what current hardware actually does well, yes, with realistic expectations set going in. For someone drawn purely by the novelty and general excitement around the category, I'd suggest waiting, trying a friend's pair first if possible, because the gap between the marketing pitch and the daily reality is real enough that novelty alone doesn't reliably survive first contact with actually living with the device.
