Why I Still Shoot a Roll of Film a Few Times a Year

By Pranav Arya · PAFP · #film-photography · #technique · #creative-practice

Film has no place in my actual client delivery pipeline, and I still load a roll a few times a year purely for myself, not as a nostalgia exercise but because it's genuinely made my digital work better in a way I didn't fully expect when I started doing it again a couple of years ago.

Limited frames force real decisiveness

Thirty-six frames on a roll, no chimping the back of a screen to check, forces a level of commitment to each shot that digital's effectively unlimited capacity quietly erodes over time. I've noticed my digital hit rate genuinely improved after periods of shooting more film, not because film taught me a new technical skill exactly, but because it retrained the instinct to actually commit to a frame rather than spraying and hoping one of fifty near-identical shots works.

The delay changes how you evaluate your own work

Not seeing a result for days or weeks, until the roll gets developed, means evaluating a shot purely on whether it felt right in the moment rather than immediately second-guessing based on an instant screen preview. That delayed, more trusting relationship with your own judgment is something I've tried to bring back into digital shooting too, trusting the decision made in the moment more than the anxious urge to check and re-shoot immediately.

Not a recommendation to switch back

I'm not suggesting anyone move client work back to film, that would be genuinely impractical for almost every job I actually do. This is a personal practice specifically because it's useful as a periodic reset for habits digital's convenience quietly wears down over time. A few rolls a year, purely for myself, has turned out to be worth far more to my actual paid work than the hours it costs would suggest on paper.
