I wrote off APS-C bodies for serious travel work a few years back based on a real, meaningful gap in low-light and dynamic range performance against full frame at the time. Current APS-C sensors have closed enough of that gap that it's worth genuinely revisiting the recommendation rather than repeating old conventional wisdom that's quietly gone stale.
Where the gap has genuinely closed
Daylight and well-lit dynamic range performance on current APS-C bodies is close enough to full frame that I genuinely can't reliably tell the difference in delivered work without checking metadata, which wasn't true a few generations back. For the majority of travel and event shooting, which happens in reasonably lit conditions more often than the low-light scenarios gear reviews tend to fixate on, that gap closing matters more than any remaining difference in extreme low light.
Where full frame still has a real, honest edge
Genuinely dim conditions, indoor event spaces with minimal ambient light, still show a real difference in noise performance and recoverable shadow detail, and I won't pretend otherwise. If a significant share of your actual work happens in that specific lighting scenario, full frame's advantage remains real rather than just legacy conventional wisdom. For daylight-heavy travel and outdoor brand work specifically, the gap has narrowed enough that I no longer think it's the deciding factor it used to be.

What actually changed my mind
Carrying a lighter APS-C kit through a genuinely demanding multi-country travel shoot this year, and comparing the delivered results directly against comparable full-frame work from the same trip type a couple years back, made the case more convincingly than any spec sheet comparison could. The weight savings compounded across weeks of travel in a way that mattered more day to day than I expected going in, and the image quality gap I remembered simply wasn't there anymore in the conditions I actually shot in.
