A decent chunk of my work happens somewhere without reliable power, a remote location shoot, a festival site with limited outlet access, a multi-day event where the crew room outlet is shared by twenty other people's chargers. A compact power station solved a problem I'd been managing badly with a pile of loose power banks for years.
Why loose power banks weren't actually working
Individual power banks for cameras, lights, a laptop, and a phone meant carrying five different devices with five different charge states to track, and inevitably the one thing I actually needed was the one that had been left half-charged. Consolidating into a single power station with multiple outputs, including a real AC outlet for anything that doesn't take USB-C, removed that specific failure mode entirely.
What actually matters in the spec sheet
Capacity gets the marketing focus, and it matters less than output flexibility for how I actually use one. A unit with a real AC pass-through outlet handles a laptop charger or a small LED panel without an adapter, which matters more day to day than an extra few hundred watt-hours of capacity I rarely fully drain anyway. Weight is the other real trade-off nobody advertises honestly, more capacity is heavier, and I'd rather carry a smaller unit and recharge more often than one so heavy it stays in the car.

Where it earns its keep most
The single most valuable use case has turned out to be keeping camera batteries topped up during a long multi-day shoot without hunting for an outlet every night, which sounds minor and has genuinely removed a recurring source of low-grade stress from remote jobs. Not an exciting piece of gear to write about. It's the kind of unglamorous investment that quietly prevents an actual production problem.
