Every action camera generation promises improved audio, and every generation still sounds like it was recorded from inside a wind tunnel the moment you're moving at any real speed. I stopped expecting built-in mics to solve this and started building a small, dedicated workaround instead, and it's genuinely fixed the problem for the shots that matter.
Why built-in mics will probably never be good enough
The physical constraints are real, not just a software problem a firmware update will eventually fix. A microphone mounted directly on a housing that's strapped to a moving body or vehicle is going to pick up wind noise, vibration, and handling noise almost no matter how good the internal processing gets. Expecting a future update to fully solve this is expecting physics to change, and I've stopped holding out for it.
The actual fix: separate the audio source entirely
For anything where audio genuinely matters, I record separately on a small clip-on wireless mic and sync in post rather than relying on the camera's built-in audio at all. It adds a step in editing, syncing a second audio source to picture, but modern editing software handles waveform auto-sync well enough now that it's rarely more than a few seconds of extra work per clip.
- Built-in mics: fine for reference audio, not for anything delivered
- Separate wireless mic: the actual fix, worth the extra sync step
- Wind noise specifically responds well to a simple foam windscreen, cheap and effective
When I don't bother
For pure B-roll where audio was never going to be used anyway, ambient action shots destined for a music-driven edit, I don't bother with a separate mic at all and just accept whatever the built-in one captures, because it genuinely doesn't matter for that footage. Knowing which shots need real audio and which don't ahead of time saves the hassle of over-preparing for footage that was always going to be silent in the final cut.
