You Don't Need After Effects for Simple Motion Graphics

For years my workflow involved round-tripping simple title cards and lower thirds out to a separate motion graphics app, which meant a separate render, a separate import, and a separate place for something to go wrong right before a deadline. I finally sat down and forced myself to build my standard title templates directly in Resolve's Fusion page instead, and I haven't round-tripped for a simple graphic since.

What actually belongs in Fusion versus a dedicated app

Fusion isn't trying to be a full replacement for a dedicated compositing app, and I don't pretend it is. Anything genuinely complex, elaborate particle work, heavy 3D compositing, still leaves my Resolve project. But a clean lower third with a subtle wipe, a title card with a soft parallax push, a simple logo reveal, all of that lives entirely inside the node-based Fusion page now, sitting right next to the edit timeline it belongs to.

The node-based approach, once it clicks

I resisted Fusion's node system for longer than I should have because it looks intimidating coming from layer-based tools. Once it clicked, it's genuinely faster for the kind of repeatable template work I do constantly, because a node tree is easier to save, modify, and reuse across projects than a stack of layers with settings buried in individual panels. I keep a small library of saved node setups now, a lower third, a title card, a simple transition, and dragging one into a new project takes seconds.

Where this actually saves time

The real time savings isn't the render itself. It's eliminating the version-control headache of a graphic living in two separate project files that need to stay in sync. Client wants a name spelled differently on a lower third, that's a thirty-second fix inside the same timeline now, not a trip back to another application, a re-render, and a re-import. Small friction removed, repeated across every single project, adds up to real hours over a year.
