Meta finally announced the display version of the Ray-Ban Meta glasses, alongside a wristband controller that reads muscle signals to navigate the interface without touching the frame. I've had brief hands-on time and a lot of time reading the actual spec sheet rather than the highlight reel, and my reaction is more measured than most of the coverage I've seen so far.
The wristband is the real story
Everyone's talking about the display, and the display is genuinely impressive for a first generation, a small color panel visible only to the wearer that doesn't distort the lens for anyone looking at you. But the neural wristband is the part that actually changes how usable this is day to day. Subtle finger movements controlling a cursor without lifting your hand or touching the frame is the kind of input method that sounds gimmicky until you try it, and then it just makes every other AR control scheme feel clumsy by comparison.
What I'd actually use it for on set
A discreet viewfinder-style overlay while operating a gimbal with both hands occupied is the obvious use case for my work, and from the demo I saw, that's plausible, not a stretch. Camera settings, a basic framing grid, maybe a battery warning without needing to pull out a phone mid-shoot. That's a real, specific workflow improvement, not a feature I'd use once and forget.

Reasons I'm not pre-ordering yet
$799 with the wristband is a real commitment for hardware in its first generation, and first-generation Meta hardware has historically had rough edges that get sorted out a version or two later. I'd rather watch how the display holds up in daily use for a few months, particularly outdoors in bright light where small displays tend to wash out, before putting this in a client-facing kit. Curious, genuinely, just not an early adopter on this one.
